In preparing for their future careers, the next generation of animators and artists need not be waylaid by such rumors. Below are five common myths about the world of cartoons and the realities behind them. Myth: 2D animation is a dying art. Nothing could be further from the truth. Tracking Non-parallaxed Footage for Effects

2009/05/21 Vincent MacTiernan
Workflow testing on “Not So Peaceful” By Vincent MacTiernan “Not So Peaceful” was a test piece to see how well bad, handheld footage could be tracked with no parallax. So, I started out shooting some footage by the East River in New York City using a first generation Flip Video camcorder (the battery-operated one). After offloading the footage, to my workstation, I then ran it through Andersson Technologies’ SynthEyes tracker (a program that has bailed me out of more tight situations than any other tracking software). Pipelines don’t create stories; people do. The biggest trends in animation today are both driving and driven by the same thing: an evolution in storytelling. We see directors now who are just as comfortable behind workstations as they are behind cameras, and they’re experimenting with all kinds of techniques to create new experiences for audiences. This blending of techniques—CG, stereo 3D, live action, stop motion, miniatures, machinima, performance capture, and other approaches—requires that we, as creative companies, expand our thinking and capabilities too.
