Hollywood Post Alliance Announces Judge's Award

When the Third Annual Hollywood Post Alliance (HPA) Awards unfold on November 6th, 2008, winners will be announced in ten creative categories, in Engineering Excellence and for the first time, with the HPA Judge’s Award for Creativity and Innovation in Post Production.

The HPA Judges Award was conceived in recognition of the intensely creative, technology-fueled and challenging environment that content creators, post production facilities, experts, and manufacturers operate in. Throughout the first three years of the Awards, judges often saw innovative ideas, products and processes that did not fit into any Awards category, but were nonetheless noteworthy. The Judge’s Award offers an opportunity to reward innovative thinking in the areas of new tools, workflows and ideas that enhance the post production process from a technical, creative or efficiency perspective. The award shines a spotlight on companies and individuals that demonstrate excellence in one or more of these areas.

The Judges Award will be presented at the HPA Awards on November 6th at the Skirball Cultural Center during a gala evening.

Digital Film Tree for A modern data-centric post network and workflow and CBS/Paramount Television for the use of this workflow on the series “Everybody Hates Chris”

Digital Film Tree
A unique workflow encompassing a data sharing and storage network and specially designed editorial systems that allows clients to multiply the output of work done by the same manpower.

CBS/Paramount Television
The first network show to utilize the fully file based HD workflow created in collaboration with Digital Film Tree.

LaserPacific Media Corporation for accurateIMAGE (aIM)
A color calibrated end-to-end motion picture process that provides Digital Cinema quality dailies that look like film.

Sony Pictures Imageworks for “Beowulf 3D” stereoscopic post-production pipeline
A proprietary pipeline created for the production of the stereoscopic 3D adaptation of “Beowulf” for both IMAX and digital 3D theaters.

HPA Judge’s Award recipient Ramy Katrib, Founder of Digital Film Tree, commented, “This is a reward for our obsession to always do things better, to figure out great solutions which help our clients succeed. We’re honestly proud to be recognized by the HPA, and to win with our clients and friends at CBS is really amazing.” Erik Whitmyre, Co Producer/Everybody Hates Chris said, “Implementing a fully file based HD workflow for 'Everybody Hates Chris' was a real battle but the positive results, in all aspects of our post work, have been substantial. The collaboration with DigitalFilm Tree, our camera department with D.P. Mark Doering-Powell and with Executive Producer Ali LeRoi and Co-Executive Producer Jim Michaels have resulted in a perfect storm for finishing a network television show: We have for two seasons finished this show faster, better, more economically and with less stress than any show I have been associated with.”

Leon Silverman with LaserPacific stated, “The aIM process is a part of the long tradition of innovation pioneered by LaserPacific. It is very gratifying that our peers in post production have recognized the importance of our color calibrated workflow and the role it plays in the industry.”

“For Beowulf 3D, the stereoscopic team at Imageworks created a new pipeline that enabled a high level of control over the 3D experience and provided productivity improvements unseen on our past 3D films,” said Rob Engle, sr. stereographer and digital effects supervisor. “The final result pushed the limits of modern stereoscopic filmmaking.”

The HPA Awards will also honor Elizabeth Daley (The Charles S. Swartz Award), Ron Burdett (Lifetime Achievement Award), and Quantel, FastSoft and Panasonic (The Engineering Excellence Award) and ten creative categories. The event will be hosted by popular actor and director Wil Shiner. Further information is available online or by calling the HPA at 213.614.0860 or writing info@hpaawards.net.
